Derailed? // 5 Resolutions to Combat a Hectic Schedule

27 Mar

In my last post, I mentioned that I was going to take the time to re-evaluate and define my goals as a way of giving myself a “fresh start” for Spring. As it turns out, this proved to be more difficult than I originally had planned.

Between working part-time, going to school, and trying to handle an internship all at the same time, I generally don’t have a whole lot of spare time, so I was really looking forward to this break. While I am certainly happy to have had the last few days off from school, I found that even though I am on “Spring Break”, I haven’t really had time off.  I looked down at my dayplanner today (I am the To-Do list King), and I realized that my precious days off have filled up with volunteering, an interview for an upcoming fashion event next month, and various tasks that I have taken on either as favors to others or just to get them done.  Basically, I feel like I am always living in the future, and that this mindset is not uncommon nowadays. We are always thinking GO, GO, GO and ON TO THE NEXT thing that we rush through life living on auto-pilot. It’s like clockwork. We are always trying to be better, faster, and accomplish more, and we end up working ourselves like dogs and treating ourselves like we are machines, which I assure you, my friends, we are not. It reminded me of a favorite lyric from Patrick Wolf which I will share with you:

“Have I been travelling so long / that I forgot how to stop?”

Yes, I know I have not been travelling. I have nowhere NEAR enough time for that. 😛 But, what I mean is, I have become so accustomed to being busy and managing an overloaded schedule, that my life has started to barrel off the tracks. It’s like I’m not even in control anymore. As a 24 year old man living in a new city, I would like to live in the moment, appreciate my surroundings, and take the time to stop and smell the roses, as it were. While I appreciate hard work, determination, and working towards reaching goals, there has to be some type of a balance. This type of tireless, martyr-esque, I CAN DO EVERYTHING behaviour can only lead to one outcome: exhaustion, burn out, and probably a sense of “How the hell did I get here?” when we finally run ourselves into the ground, collapse, and hit rock bottom.

In order to obtain a sense of balance in my life, I have come up with the following 5 resolutions to try and re-gain some sanity and control over my ridiculous schedule:

——————————————————————————————-

1. I will surround myself with things that inspire and excite me.

2. I will examine how I am spending my time and prioritize making time for friends and family.

3. I will know my limits, and learn when to say no.

4. I will make time for physical activity in my schedule at least 3 times a week.

5. I will remember to take a breath, live in the moment, and appreciate the many blessings that I have in my life that I take for granted.

——————————————————————————————-

I hope these statements may be able to help you recognize if your life is out of balance and give you some suggestions on how to veer that train back onto the tracks! 🙂 One of the biggest resolutions I have come up with is to surround myself with things that inspire and excite me. Those things that make me want to get out of bed in the morning with a zest and excitement for life. Here are a few of my biggest sources of inspiration:

♥ Fashion

This one shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. 🙂 This is my absolute favorite collection of all time. This collection epitomizes my style aspirations. Without further adieu… I give you the Balmain F/W 2011 menswear collection:

♥ Music

Music is a universal language that we all can relate to. You know that feeling you get when you hear a certain artist or track and it just resonates with your very being and SOUL? Or maybe you just really enjoy listening to it. :p Either way, music is always a source of inspiration and joy for me. Here is a definite favorite. Patrick Wolf’s The Bachelor sees the lovely Tilda Swinton appearing on some of the tracks (favorite tracks: Theseus, The Sun Is Often Out, and Damaris):

Nature

While recently walking by the beach and enjoying the lovely Spring weather, I snapped a few photos with my phone that are of horrible quality but I find beautiful anyways. Nature can be terrifying or beautiful, but it is a constant source of inspiration to me.

Epic Stories

I recently started re-reading Homer’s The Odyssey. Something about epic tales of adventure and courage makes me wish I lived in Ancient Greece… until I remember how much I love modern inventions and the internet and electricity… but that bravery, courage, and importance of maintaining one’s honor is something that I try to bring to my daily life in little ways.

What about you? What inspires you most? Do you also catch yourself running on auto-pilot? How do you create a balance in your life between accomplishing your goals and living a satisfying and fulfilling life?

Until next time my faithful intrepids,

xx Scott
